"John Olivas of Jaco Outfitters worked hard to help me harvest my first pronghorn.
Those who think it’s like shooting fish in a barrel need to know the barrel is 20 sections and as far as the eye can see. Our final stalk got us to 350 yards and we belly crawled the final 100 yards to cut the distance down to 250 yards.
At that point the antelope laid down and the wait was on. Thirty minutes later all hell broke loose as a doe came running by us at 75 years followed by our buck. I had just enough time to grab my rifle off the ground and take two shots sitting down. Twenty seconds later I had my first pronghorn.
Advice to the
novice: bring leather gloves and knee pads just in case.
It was a great hunt and I had fun even at 68 years young!"

John,
I hope this finds you well. I again want to say Thank You! Almost one year ago I was looking to go on an elk hunt. Having been burned in the past on a previous guided hunt I had many reservations about ever going on a guided hunt again. With much hesitation, I set out to research elk hunts. During this process I was fortunate to identify your organization. You were so helpful from the very beginning. You were honest, thoughtful, and always put my needs first.
Upon arrival to your camp, I was greeted and treated like family. From the very first day of hunting, my guide worked so hard to afford me the best opportunity to be successful. He was knowledgable, helpful, and tenacious in his pursuit to guide me on this hunt. The lodging was very comfortable and the food was delicious. My hunt was everything I had hoped for! I can’t say enough about you, your family, and your guides.
Respectfully,
Jay Kocian

I have been hunting with Jaco Outfitters and John Olivas since 2006. I live in Virginia and absolutely treasure my trips to the Mora Valley to hunt elk. I have drawn muzzleloader tags as well as archery tags using Jaco. The value that Jaco brings to the table is priceless. From the draw paperwork to the butcher shop, John provides a one stop shopping experience that lets the hunter focus on the hunt. Your accommodations, food, local transport, and friendly atmosphere are generously provided. Each time I hunted with Jaco , I have had at least one opportunity to harvest a prize bull elk. I have tagged out fifteen minutes into day 1 while on a muzzleloader hunt, scoring a beautiful 330” bull at over 11,000 feet of elevation, and have also struggled with bags packed on day 5 of a very intense archery hunt, to shoot a young 5×4 at 65 yards. During that archery hunt we were in elk every day. On day one of that hunt, John and I chased bugles for 7 miles before we found ourselves right in the middle of three enormous bulls. They were running and bugling and fighting and glunking. That glunking noise was new to me, and I had never seen an elk confrontation in person before, so this was a very special experience for me. As we watched this for twenty minutes or so, and I was desperately trying to sneak an arrow between the trees at one of these magnificent creatures. I am sure that I had my bow drawn for over five minutes and still was not presented with an ethical shot. The shot never happened that day, but that moment is the highlight of my hunting career. I have never been witness to such a display of dominance and hormone driven rage.
All this excitement, and it all takes place in one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. Spectacular mountain views, beautiful sunrises and sunsets, friendly townsfolk. Very nice. I will return again in 2017.
If you are considering a New Mexico elk hunt, I highly recommend Jaco Outfitters. The local knowledge and experience that John and his guides provide will give you the best chance for success. I also recommend that you do your part so that you will give yourself the best chance of success – GET IN SHAPE. Your ability to go further, higher, and faster than your fellow hunters will pay off. Elk are super athletes. We are mere mortals. And the mountains are for real.
Enjoy your special hunt with a special outfitter. Jaco. I promise many vivid, life- long, memories.

I first hunted with JACO Outfitters in 2013 in quest of my first Grand Slam for Merriam Turkeys after researching and contacts with many hunters and biologist about the best Outfitter for that in New Mexico. JACO and John Olivas the owner were at the top of their list. I was able to take my first Merriam opening day of 2013 to complete my Grand Slam in 30 days of that year. John and his main guide Danny Alcon were professional in every aspect for an outfitter, and the facility and hunting grounds were superb as was the quantity of turkey and other game we saw on the hunt. I’ve re-booked every year since and have taken many friends and guests and they will all agree it was a truly super experience. I’ve completed 4 Grand Slams now and all of my Merriams were taken with JACO. (Also their turkeys are pure strain Merriam, not hybrid Rio-Merriams, that some outfitters have in NM) I just completed this years hunt yesterday and took another exceptional Gobbler to complete my 2017 Slam with friends from Kentucky. Food, Guides, Hospitality and quantity of game were exceptional as always!

Last minute business trip to New Mexico and John worked with me to make this hunt happen. John and his guides know where the birds are and work to get you an opportunity. During my hunt we had less than ideal weather (high winds, rain/snow) and still everyone in camp had at least one shot at a mature gobbler With several able to tag two birds.
If business brings me west again next spring, I will definitely be giving JACO a call.

My wife and I hunted with Jaco Outfitters for a three day 2015 spring turkey hunt. John was fantastic, he accommodated my wife’s hiking speed and was very courteous to our needs and wants. We were able to harvest turkeys. We want others to know that this experience is well worth the money. The hunt was great and the food at Kristis Korner Kafe is fantastic, book and enjoy a hunt of a lifetime.
