How to Prepare Your Firearm Before Your Big Game Hunt

As summer continues, we are one step closer to one of the best times of the year. That’s right, big game hunting season. For any hunter, you know the feeling of anticipation waiting for the season to start. However, before you head out to hunt, there is a lot of firearm preparation that needs to happen first.

Make the most out of your hunt and set yourself up for a successful hunting season by preparing your firearm this summer. Here are a few steps you can take to make sure that your firearm is ready to go!

Hunting in New Mexico

Cleaning Your Firearm

Can you remember the last time you cleaned your gun? If you have to think about it, odds are you probably need to clean your firearm. Before you go ahead and start cleaning, make sure you are double-checking that your gun is unloaded. Attempting to clean a loaded gun can cause the gun to fire, leading to critical injuries.

After unloading, make sure you have all the supplies that you need before starting! Then, you’ll take apart your gun and carefully start cleaning the barrel. After, you can clean the action, which is the most common source of jamming and misfiring.

Don’t Forget to Sight In

Whether you notice that your gun is off, or shooting just fine, you should still remember to sight in. Before heading out for the hunting season, you want to make sure that your shots are accurate. Sighting in helps minimize human error while hunting. While sighting, you should also use the ammo you will use when hunting for the best results.

Practice Beforehand

The best part about preparing for the hunting season is practicing! Make sure you’re shooting your gun often before the hunting season. Practicing shooting helps you identify any problems with your firearm, giving you enough time to solve them before the hunting season.

Most hunts in New Mexico take place anywhere from 6,000 to 10,500 feet above sea level. When you hunt in New Mexico, the air is much thinner, causing bullets to fly longer distances. If you’re used to shooting in lower elevations, don’t worry. JACO Outfitters will work with you to make sure your weapon is accurate for a successful hunt.
